Thesis Abstract

Racism has been made institutional in American public education and has created racial disparities in academic performance, rates of graduation from high schools, rates of enrollment in special education and/or honors programs, and funding. The United States’ publicly enrolled student body is steadily becoming further saturated with racial, ethnic, and cultural minorities; if drastic measures are not taken to counter racism in public education, the institution will fail to adapt to the changing demographics. This failure will cause the institution to cease to effectively educate citizens. Alterations to school curricula as well as local, state, and federal policy could help counter institutional racism.
